ISO 14001 Environment Management Systems
ISO 14001:2015 is the internationally agreed standard for managing your environmental responsibilities - reducing your impact, using resources more efficiently, and improving as you go.
Certified by a JASANZ-accredited body (like us!), that commitment isn't just something you claim. It's proof your customers, your supply chain partners, and government bodies can trust; the recognised mark that you take your environmental impact seriously and have built the system to manage it.

What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is the world's international standard for environmental management. Used by organisations in more than 180 countries, it's the most widely adopted environmental standard there is; the recognised framework for understanding your environmental impact and actively working to reduce it.
At its heart is a simple commitment: understand how your organisation affects the environment, and manage it responsibly. The standard helps you identify where your impact actually sits - energy, waste, water, emissions, resource use meet your compliance obligations, and set real targets to improve over time. Increasingly it encourages "lifecycle thinking" too: looking beyond your own front door to the impact of what you buy, make, and sell.
Like other ISO management standards, it's built to fit any organisation: a manufacturer, a service business, or an office-based team, of any size. It sets out how to manage your environmental responsibilities, not a fixed list of what to do, so it adapts to the impacts that are genuinely relevant to your business.
In practice, being certified to ISO 14001 means you've built an Environmental Management System (EMS) that meets the internationally agreed best practice and had an independent, accredited body (like us!) verify it. It's the difference between saying you care about your impact and being able to prove you're managing it.

DO WE NEED ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is more than a compliance exercise. it's proof you're serious about your impact, and a smarter way to run your business.
CEnvironmental responsibility - ISO 14001 shows your customers, your community, and your industry that reducing your environmental impact isn't a slogan, it's something you actively manage and can prove.
Tender and supply chain access - More and more government tenders and large organisations require ISO 14001 from their suppliers. As environmental expectations tighten up the supply chain, certification is increasingly the price of entry and a genuine advantage over competitors who don't have it.
Cost savings - Managing your impact usually means using less: less energy, less waste, less water, fewer raw materials. The efficiencies that come from an environmental management system often pay for themselves.
Legal compliance - Environmental regulation is only getting stricter. ISO 14001 gives you a structured way to stay on top of your obligations, reducing the risk of breaches, penalties, and reputational damage before they happen.
Risk and resilience - Identifying your environmental risks and the impact of a changing climate on your operations helps you make better decisions and build a business that's ready for what's ahead.
Reputation and trust - Customers, staff, and partners increasingly want to work with organisations that take sustainability seriously. Certification backs up your environmental claims with independent proof, not greenwashing.

FAQs
We're not a manufacturer or heavy industry, do we still need ISO 14001?
It's a common myth that ISO 14001 is only for factories or high-impact industries. Every organisation has an environmental footprint: energy use, waste, travel, procurement, the resources you consume day to day. ISO 14001 scales to whatever is genuinely material to your business, whether you're an office, a service provider, or a construction firm. If a tender or client is asking for it, being "low impact" doesn't exempt you.
Isn't this just greenwashing with a certificate?
It's the opposite. Greenwashing is making environmental claims you can't back up. ISO 14001 is independent, accredited proof that your environmental management is real, assessed by a third party, verifiable on the public IAF CertSearch register, and re-checked every year. It's precisely what lets you make environmental claims credibly, rather than hoping no one asks for evidence.
Does ISO 14001 mean we have to hit specific environmental targets?
Not targets we set for you. The standard doesn't dictate a particular emissions figure or a fixed outcome. Instead, it requires you to understand your impacts, meet your compliance obligations, set your own meaningful objectives, and show you're improving over time. The commitments are yours, ISO 14001 makes sure they're structured, tracked, and real.
How does ISO 14001 relate to net zero, carbon, or sustainability reporting?
ISO 14001 is the management foundation that makes the rest credible. It's not a carbon or net zero standard in itself, but the system it builds, measuring impact, setting objectives, tracking improvement is exactly what underpins credible carbon reduction and sustainability reporting. Many organisations use ISO 14001 as the backbone their wider sustainability goals sit on top of.
Can we combine ISO 14001 with ISO 9001 or 45001?
Yes and it's a natural fit. ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 share the same underlying structure, so combining them into a single integrated audit is more efficient and less disruptive than certifying separately. Many organisations run all three together as an integrated management system. If you're considering more than one, tell us and we'll quote it that way.
How long is an ISO 14001 certificate valid?
Three years. After initial certification, we carry out lighter surveillance audits each year to confirm your environmental management system is working in practice, then a recertification audit at the three-year mark.
